STRIP TEASE
WE HEAR ... those who held executive positions as well as other employees, were sent packing as a result of Navegante taking over operations of the Barrick properties. High-level bigwigs at the then-Barrick property, the Plaza Hotel and Casino, were sent packing first, according to a former employee. "They cut a lot of suits to make it more attractive (for new operator Navegante's) PLayLV."
It wasn't just the big cheeses who were told to hit the road, but also all the Plaza's in-house live entertainment staff and at least one live in-house production. That occurred in the weeks following the Dec. 22 change of hands of the Barrick properties. The only live entertainment available at the Plaza now consists of whatever acts are brought in, and they have to bring their own production people, according to the ex-employee. As for filling the executive spots, we hear that no new business cards have been printed yet.
WE HEAR ... that according to Nevada Gaming Control Board Chairman Dennis Neilander -- and contrary to what Barrick Gaming President Stephen Crystal told BP -- not all disagreements between Barrick and its erstwhile landlord, Luxembourg-based Tamares Group, have been settled. Still at issue is the $6.5 million that Tamares wants to withhold from Barrick's exit fee. Neilander informed BP that the disputed money is still outstanding and the matter will go to arbitration in late February.
WE HEAR ... don't rush to book seats on the ferris wheel announced for the site of the Westward Ho Casino. According to an Oct. 15, 2005 article in Construction Week, the would-be builder of the wheel, Voyager Entertainment, bailed out of a comparable project in Dubai after warning the Securities & Exchange Commission it was near bankruptcy. An investigation by the periodical found Voyager's finances to be dodgy and its financier to be operating out of a Dubai hotel suite.
WE HEAR ... a source close to the BP reports that the owners of the Tropicana Resort & Casino, Aztar Corp., are negotiating with demolition companies.
