Mattress Firm gets grip on Vegas

A mattress retailer based in Houston is hoping for a soft landing in Las Vegas. The Lone Star State's Mattress Firm has signed a letter of intent to acquire the 15-store chain Bedtime Mattress Co. and Mattress Direct.

The fast-growing market attracted Mattress Firm, according to CEO Gary Fazio. The retailer contacted Las Vegas store owner Brad Friedman with the buyout offer. The planned acquisition of the stores will mark Mattress Firm's entry into Nevada.

"The letter was actually signed four or five days ago and we were going around from store to store today. We are a growing chain and (Bedroom Mattress) is one of the top specialty chains in Las Vegas," Fazio said while in town recently, touring the Las Vegas stores.

Customers can expect to see some changes right away. Remodeling will take place at the 15 stores to create the female-friendly appearance that Mattress Firm outlets across the country already offer, Fazio says.

"The store design is different," he said of Mattress Firm's aesthetic. "It is a warmer redesign." Even store bathrooms will get a makeover. The Houston buyer isn't doing the remodeling on the cheap, either. The cost to redo the 15 stores is "in the seven figures."

After being renamed "Mattress Firm," the Vegas locations will be the only local outlet where customers can purchase both Tempur-Pedic mattresses and Select Comfort beds, says Fazio with pride.

When the Las Vegas deal is completed, Mattress Firm will have 400 stores. It will also be the largest mattress retailer in the valley. No layoffs were planned for the market but, Fazio cautions, it is still very early in the acquisition stage.
