It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it

Arizona-based company to bring its ecofriendly pet-waste removal to the valley

When the doggie does the doo, getting it up and out is the only responsible thing to do. That, everyone agrees.

So, why not hire someone else to do it, particularly if proper placement of the pet's poo is good for the environment?

Pet owners can outsource the pooper-scooper when Tucson, Ariz.-based Doo Care arrives in Las Vegas next year. Doo Care offers a variety of affordable pet-waste-removal options for customers and franchise opportunities for the business crowd.

Doo Care President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Hays demonstrates his company's service. The Arizona-based business, coming soon to Las Vegas, offers a variety of affordable pet-waste-removal options for customers and franchise opportunities for businesspeople. Residential clients can have their pet's waste removed twice a week, weekly or every other week. The company also does one-time cleanings for special occasions.

Residential clients can have their pet's waste removed twice weekly, weekly or every other week. The company also does one-time cleanings for special occasions. The service costs between $9 and $15 for one dog and depends on the frequency of visits. For each additional dog there is a weekly surcharge of $2.30.

Doo Care's waste-removal service is also available to corporate clients such as condominium and apartment complexes, homeowner associations and city parks. Along with removing the waste, Doo Care can install and stock "waste stations," which are locations for people to get biodegradable bags to use when picking up their dogs' waste. For commercial clients cost is linked to the size of the community. The minimum fee for a small community is $30 per visit. The price increases with the community size and the amount of time it takes to clean the area.

"Dog waste is a liability for our commercial clients," Doo Care President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Hays said. "The property must meet health code."

The company prides itself on being a "green service provider" by exclusively using biodegradable bags, disposing of the waste appropriately and by offering customers two ways to recycle their dog's waste. By using biodegradable bags the dog waste will break down in only a few months and take up less space in landfills.

Doo Care customers can eliminate their dogs' waste from entering a landfill by using one of the company's two recycling methods. Doo Care's first recycling option is a dog-waste septic system. This system is similar to a regular home septic system and allows the waste to return to the earth by using enzymes to help it dissolve. The other recycling option is composting. Doo Care will provide a customer with a compost unit and when the dog waste is properly composted it can be used to enhance gardens that do not contain food-bearing plants. Doo Care will install and manage a recycling unit as part of its service. The cost of a unit ranges from $75 to $125.

"Being ecofriendly is a core part of our company's mission," Hays said. "Dog waste is a real problem for the environment ... it can be a health hazard if it gets into a water supply."

Doo Care does not require a contract and the service can be canceled at any time. Discounts are available to seniors, foster-dog caregivers, military personnel and veterans, assistance-dog owners, customers who pay six or 12 months in advance as well as full-time veterinarians, groomers, pet sitters and their staff.

Along with its pet-waste removal services, Doo Care will be offering franchise opportunities to Las Vegas residents. Doo Care offers a five-day new franchisee training course that includes classroom and live training at an existing Doo Care operation.

The company believes that Las Vegas' market size offers potential for four local Doo Care establishments.

"Doo Care is a concept that works in most markets do to the booming interest in the pet sector," Hays said. "Being based in the Southwest we feel that Las Vegas is a natural extension in terms of our next stage of expansion."
